If someone has taken their inspiration from Erykah Badu, Billie Holiday, Missy Elliot, The Roots and Miles Davis, they’re bound to sound something like… Xenia Rubinos. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter produced her own debut album, Magic Trix, in 2012, immediately making a name for herself. On her latest record, Black Terry Cat, which came out this year, she cloaks heavy themes like social injustice and human insecurity in tunes that are so funky and hopeful that the subject matter is made a tad lighter. Pitchfork rewarded her with an 8 out of 10, and we’re sure she will graduate Crossing Border with distinction.
