VPRO Club Lees X Crossing Border: Live Club Lees meet-up about Yellowface
On Sunday, November 3rd, VPRO Club Lees will host a special live edition of their Club Lees meet-up at Crossing Border. Regular club members, including singer-songwriter Naaz, actor Hanneke van der Paardt, and Booktokker Noah de Campos Neto, will gather on stage at the Central Library of The Hague. They will discuss and engage with the audience about Yellowface by Rebecca F. Kuang, Noah's book choice, a layered, satirical novel about a white writer who appropriates her Asian friend's literary work. In The Hague, artist Rui Jun Luong will also join the discussion to talk about Asian representation and cultural appropriation: Who is allowed to tell a story?
Starting September 30th, the book will be available for free on the Club Lees app, complete with Noah’s notes, links, and videos.
A conversation about activism in literature with Carolina Trujillo (NL.)
This afternoon, renowned author Carolina Trujillo will explore activism, hope, and the power of speaking out. Trujillo's work delves into the complexities of activism, with her latest book, De instructies (The Instructions), telling the story of the timid Mol, who is convinced by his childhood friend Nora to sabotage the country’s largest slaughterhouse. The result is not only a captivating narrative but also a tribute to the belief in doing what’s right. The conversation will be moderated by acclaimed writer and moderator Roos van Rijswijk.
