How do you write a blood-curdling yet humorous novel about the bioindustry? Uruguayan-Dutch writer Carolina Trujillo (b. 1970) knows all about that. After a series of award-winning novels, this year she published De instructies (‘The Instructions’), in which we see how the timid Mol is persuaded by his childhood friend Nora to disable the largest slaughterhouse in the country. The result is not only a fantastic account, but also an ode to faith in the good.
In addition to being an author, Trujillo is a columnist for NRC Handelsblad. She made her debut in 2002 with the novel De bastaard van Mal Abrigo (‘The Bastard of Mal Abrigo’) which was awarded the Marten Toonder/Geertjan Lubberhuizen Prize. In 2009, De terugkeer van Lupe García (‘The Return of Lupe García’) appeared, with which she was shortlisted for the AKO Literature Prize and won the BNG New Literature Prize.
